Carl Whiting

I'm Carl Whiting, and am proud to open Riverine Studio Gallery here on this remarkable stretch of coast. This space is dedicated to celebrating the natural beauty of the Nehalem Valley and surrounding area. I've spent my life in environmental work, art and education, and have illustrated books, magazines, newspapers, greeting cards, and public work addressing climate change and environmental stewardship.

Since moving to the area, I have been studying, drawing, painting and photographing the abundant wildlife around the beautiful Nehalem Bay. The Roosevelt elk, deer, seals, whales, countless birds, cedars, spruces, and other flora & fauna outside these windows has provided endless inspiration for my work, and nearly all of it has been created here in this river valley.

My wife, Margaret, and I moved to Wheeler in 2016, having visited the area with our children for twenty summers before that. With a house and studio overlooking the Nehalem Bay estuary and Neahkahnie Mountain, we couldn't be happier to call this place home. At a time when our environment faces an unprecedented set of challenges, it feels good to be able to celebrate an abundance of natural beauty as we work to preserve and restore the remarkable natural world we live in.

I've completed a bachelor of fine art from the Center for Creative Studies, a masters of art in teaching from National Louis University, and a PhD in curriculum from the University of Wisconsin.

We hope you enjoy your visit to our studio gallery and the wild, rugged beauty all around us.
